Question Design Affects Students' Sense‐Making on Mathematics Word Problems

Abstract Mathematics word problems provide students with an opportunity to apply what they are learning in their mathematics classes the world around them. However, often neglect knowledge of and nonsensical responses (e.g., may answer that a school needs 12.5 buses for field trip). This study examined if question design affects students' mindset ways affect subsequent sense‐making. The hypothesis was rewriting standard introduce inherent uncertainty about result would be beneficial student performance sense‐making because it requires reason explicitly context described problem. Middle ( N = 229) were randomly assigned one three conditions.
